Path builders smooth the way on Oak Street Path

Our crack team of path builders has replaced old wooden steps on lower Oak Street Path with new steps that will smooth the way for walkers on the busy path north of the Rose Garden and Codornices Park.

“We follow standards to make the spacing more predictable and comfortable for walkers,” says Bob Gomez, Berkeley Path Wanderers Association board member and path-building liason. He reports that the path builders installed 14 steps, most of them replacing existing steps.

Oak Street Path begins at the east end of Oak Street, crosses over High Court and Laurel Street, then continues on to Euclid Avenue a block north of Eunice Street.

The path-building team spends two mornings a week working on paths; the work on lower Oak Street Path took them about 3 weeks to complete. The team included path-building lead Steve Glaeser, Gomez, Annie Hill, Nick Jones, David Kittams, and Diane Resek.

Gomez shares that when the path team was out working, almost everyone who passed by thanked them for the work they were doing. And his reply? “Most of us are retired and we need something to do. Thanks for using the paths!”
