South Berkeley: Virtual Walking Tour
Join us for a fun and interesting virtual walking tour (on Zoom) of South Berkeley, featuring the historic Lorin and Ashby neighborhoods around Ashby BART and San Pablo Park. Due to redlining, South Berkeley residents were predominantly Black, Asian, and people of color. Famous area residents include William Byron Rumford, California's first Black assemblyperson and architect of the state's Fair Housing law; community transportation activist Mable Howard; Lois the Pie Queen; and her daughter, gospel singer Tramaine Hawkins. The neighborhood boasts historic churches and architecture, colorful murals, lively parks, and much more. The tour is led by Bob Johnson and Janet Byron, co-authors of Berkeley Walks, and Tina Jones Williams (pictured), author of the Julia Street Series of books, based on her childhood in South Berkeley.

Please click here to register in advance for the Zoom meeting, so that we know how many people will be attending. You may register up until and on the day of the meeting. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

To celebrate this presentation, we are offering a special on Bob Johnson and Janet Byron’s excellent book, Berkeley Walks. Through October 25th, copies of the 2nd edition, signed by both authors, are on sale for $18 (retail price $19.95) with free delivery in Berkeley, Albany, Kensington and North Oakland. Please click here to purchase.
