Leader: Tamara Gurin
Start/End: Southwest corner of The Alameda and Solano Avenue
Distance: 4 miles
Accessibility: Some steep steps and uneven trails on the route. This walk includes 10 stairways, exploring rock features in the parks by climbing steep, carved steps. This part of the walk is not wheelchair accessible. Dogs on leash are welcome. Kids are welcome, too, if they are well supervised. An elevation gain of 817 feet.
We'll visit 7 of Berkeley's wonderful rock parks by following the rock walk (walk 10) laid out in Berkeley Walks, a guidebook written by our board members Janet Byron and Bob Johnson:
Great Stoneface Park
Contra Costa Rock Park
Indian Rock Park
Mortar Rock Park
Grotto Rock Park
Cragmont Rock Park
Remillard Park
We'll enjoy the views, talk about the history of the parks and their geology, and do a little bit of climbing (optional!). Then we will loop back to the starting point. Please dress in layers and bring snacks and water.
If you are driving, allow ample time to find parking. Free street parking is available in the neighborhood. For public transportation, you can take bus routes 79, 18, or 12. The North Berkeley BART station is a 30 minute walk away.
