Starting in a neighborhood of large and impressive early 20th century homes, we will work our way up into the zone rebuilt after the 1991 East Bay hills fire, crossing now and then over the Berkeley-Oakland border. In addition to noting some of the architecture we will enjoy wide views (weather permitting), good exercise, a small creek, and a couple of unusual paths—including one that leads to a hillside area of a little-known protected open space.
Alvarado and other nearby streets are narrow, so when parking be careful to get as close to the curb as possible, and do not block any driveways. AC Transit service may be available to Ashby and Claremont Avenue/Tunnel Road; check schedules.
