With many thanks to all of our donors, two new handrails were installed in early January on Middle Glendale Path (connecting Queens Road and Fairlawn Drive), and Upper Halkin Walk (connecting Hilldale and Euclid avenues).
Berkeley Path Wanderers Association was able to purchase the two sets of handrails, which cost $43,100 with installation, due to the generosity of our members.
"We consistently hear from path wanderers that handrails are the number one need on Berkeley paths," says Janet Byron, the association's current president. "By purchasing our swag and contributing, you can help us to continuously repair, maintain, and upgrade our beloved paths network."
Charlie Bowen, path building leader of Berkeley Path Wanderers Association, says the two new handrails were worth the wait.
“Two much-needed handrails were installed in early January,” Bowen says. “The work started in the week after Christmas, and in spite of the deluge of rain the installer crew from Bailey Fence Company came out whenever the weather allowed. They first auger the holes for the posts and set them in concrete, then weld the handrail in place on top. None of that work can be done when it is actually raining.”
Watch the newsletter for news of upcoming handrail installations! “We have enough funds to purchase two more handrails and hope to have them installed by early spring,” Byron says.
Berkeley installs handrails on Vincente Walk
Last fall the Berkeley Public Works Department installed full handrails on Vincente Walk, between The Alameda and Vincente Avenue, using funds from the $100 million T1 bond passed overwhelmingly (86.5%) by Berkeley voters in 2016.
