Leader: Alina Constantinescu
Distance and Duration of Walk: 12 miles (2,000 ft elevation gain), about 7 hours of walking plus a break for lunch and travel time from Berkeley. Dogs can join, but we don’t recommend it because of the long distance; also, dogs are not allowed on BART.
Post-hike update: You can check out photos of this fabulous outing (and add your own if you joined us) at this google photo album.
This year’s long walk takes us across San Francisco - we’ll explore the City East to West putting a ‘parks and stairs’ twist to Bay to Breakers. We’ll cross the City from the Embarcadero to Land’s End via hidden parks, stairs, and less-explored, but fun landmarks. Dandelion Fountain? Check. New Francisco Park? Check. Wave Organ? Check. Pet Cemetery? Why not?
Pack your lunch for a break at the Tunnel Tops Park in the Presidio. After lunch, we continue marching West, under the Golden Gate Bridge and onto the Coastal Trail skirting the Pacific towards aptly named Land’s End. We will cover about 6 miles before lunch and 6 miles after lunch. We aim to be at our final destination at Land’s End about 4 PM and board the 38 Muni bus back to Embarcadero BART.
We are meeting in front of the turnstiles at North Berkeley BART. We’ll be taking the 8:24 AM train to SF. Make sure you come early to park, meet the group, check your clipper card, use the bathroom if you need to, etc. Parking at BART is free on weekends. If you’re boarding at other stops, please meet us in the first car. If you’d like to travel to Embarcadero on your own, please meet the group at the California St Cable Car terminus at 8:55 AM. If that’s the case, please email Alina ahead of time so we know to look for you at the Embarcadero. We aim to return to N Berkeley BART around 5:30 or 6 PM.
